History
WWYC was “conceived” in the fall of 1964 when a group of fellow boaters, anxious
to get into mischief of some kind, had a dock party among themselves and later decided
that a swinging group like this should make a serious attempt to organize a Yacht
Club. Hence, the following spring of 1965, Wide Waters Yacht Club was founded and
organized by practically the same group of men and women who attended the initial
party.
The first meeting was held outside the back door of the old boat shed at Starved
Rock Marina. Those present at the time became charter members. Of special interest,
June Helmig, attorney from Granville, Illinois, was made an honorary charter member,
and was the one who wrote the original legal documents of our charter and By-Laws
and later became the wife of the Honorable Judge Walter Dixon.
Letter From The Commodore
You found us, Wide Waters Yacht Club - a social club where friendship and acceptance are key ingredients for fun and rewarding conversation. There aren't many rules and regulations around here, beyond common sense and common courtesy.
You will find a wealth of friendship and support along with boating assistance, and some educational opportunities about the Illinois river and the clubs that are members of the I.R.B.B.A. Illinois River Basin Boaters Association
You will find a variety of intriguing stories that may link back to your past boating experiences. You will learn about the many WWYC sponsored events; but most important, you're going to meet lots of great people with the same passion and love of boating as you.
WWYC "It's about the people for the people"
We look forward to meeting you soon!
